The veteran slugger had his contract purchased by the Royals from Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday, and he made it to Kansas City in time for their game against the Seattle Mariners. Pena was available off the bench as a left-handed bat or a defensive replacement at first base.
Analysis: Pena was once among the most feared hitters in the American League, hitting 39 homers during his All-Star season of 2009. He was released by the Astros on July 31 and signed a minor league deal with the Royals a few weeks later, hopeful that he'd get another chance to play in the big leagues. The Royals are 4 1/2 games out of the AL wild card race.

Analysis: The 34-year-old Pena is coming off a rough year with the Tampa Bay Rays in which he batted .197, struck out 182 times and failed to hit at least 28 home runs for the first time since 2006. Houston is the ninth stop in Pena's major league career, and the former home run champion and Gold Glove winner might seem a little out of place on the young, low-budget Astros.
