Analysis: The 29-year-old Bailey was 3-1 with a 3.77 ERA and eight saves in 13 chances for the World Series champions, making 30 appearances before season-ending shoulder surgery on July 24. He was limited to 19 games in 2012, the first season after the Red Sox acquired him from Oakland. Bailey made $4.1 million, and by letting him go free the Red Sox could sign him without the 20 percent maximum cut rule applying.

Analysis: Bailey had been out since April 29 with right biceps inflammation. He threw 17 pitches in a rehab assignment Saturday at Triple-A Pawtucket. Bailey last pitched April 28 against Houston when he threw a scoreless inning. He's 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA and five saves. His return comes at a good time for the Red Sox, who have lost fellow reliever Joel Hanrahan for the season with an elbow injury. Boston optioned reliever Jose De La Torre to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room.

Manager John Farrell says the exam Monday is partly to give Bailey "some peace of mind on what he's dealing with."
Analysis: Asked Sunday if it was possible Bailey would have to go on the disabled list, Farrell said the Red Sox would "probably have more information" after the exam when the team gets back to Boston. Bailey last pitched April 28 against Houston, which was his fourth consecutive scoreless appearance. The right-hander has pitched in 13 games and converted five of six save opportunities. Joel Hanrahan, who missed 15 games with a right hamstring strain, has four saves.
